Animal is 동물 (dongmul). A zoo is 동물원 (dongmurwon, literally 'animal garden'). A pet is 반려동물 (ballyeo-dongmul) or casually 애완동물 (aewan-dongmul).

How do you say dog and cat in Korean?

Why are the tiger and bear important in Korean culture?

They star in Korea's founding myth: a tiger (호랑이) and a bear (곰) both wished to become human; the bear endured the trial and became Ungnyeo, mother of Dangun, the legendary founder of Korea. The tiger also appears constantly in folk tales and was the 1988 Seoul Olympics mascot (Hodori).
